Production Process of Zirconium-Containing Ceramic Fiber Blanket
The production of zirconium-containing ceramic fiber blankets uses industrial alumina, high-quality quartzite (sand), and zircon as raw materials. It is melted at 2000 ~ 2200℃ in a resistance furnace and made by a blowing fiber forming process or a spinning fiber forming process. Zirconium-containing ceramic fiber blanket is a supercooled glass containing dispersed tetragonal zirconium oxide (t-ZrO2) microcrystals. t-ZrO2 is a decomposition product of zircon, with a melting point of up to 2690℃. Within the melting temperature range of zirconium-containing fiber production, it can only exist in a dispersed crystalline phase. During the melted fiber forming process, due to the rapid drop in temperature, almost no crystallization and phase change process occurs, and t-ZrO2 in a high-temperature state is retained. t-ZrO2 plays the following roles in improving the heat resistance of the fiber in zirconium-containing ceramic fiber blanket:
- 1) Due to the high melting point of t-ZrO2, it exists in the solid phase during the use of the fiber. Therefore, the presence of t-ZrO2 greatly increases the viscosity of the glass phase and the fracture energy of the fiber, thereby improving the structural strength and tensile strength of the fiber.
- 2) Inhibit crystallization and prevent crystal growth. When the glass phase of the refractory fiber crystallizes, the nucleus is first generated, and then the crystal grows. Since the t-ZrO2 microcrystals are evenly dispersed in the glass phase, they play a role in separating the nucleus and the grains. This makes it difficult and less likely for the nucleus and grains to contact each other, making it difficult for the nucleus and grains to merge with each other to form large-sized grains.
- 3) Reduce the thermal shrinkage of the fiber. During the use of the fiber, the fiber shrinks due to crystallization and grain growth. When zirconium-containing refractory fibers are used at high temperatures, tetragonal-monoclinic (m-ZrO2) crystal transformation may occur. When t-ZrO2- + m-ZrO2 transformation occurs, there is a 3% to 5% volume expansion, which can partially compensate for the shrinkage of the fiber. At the same time, the volume effect of the tetragonal-monoclinic crystal transformation causes the glass phase of the fiber to be subjected to tensile stress, which adds resistance to the crystallization and grain growth of the fiber, thereby effectively reducing the thermal shrinkage of the fiber.
