Carbon brick products are refractory products made of heat-treated anthracite or coke, graphite as the main raw materials, and coal tar pitch as the binder. The main characteristics of carbon bricks are that they contain more than 80% fixed carbon, have no sintering properties, and have obvious sintering shrinkage. The carbon network formed by the pyrolysis reaction of the organic binder combines the carbon particles with the carbon matrix. This type of refractory bricks includes carbon bricks with anthracite or coke as the main component and graphitized artificial graphite and semi-graphite carbon bricks.
Characteristics of Carbon Bricks
Carbon bricks have high refractoriness, high thermal conductivity and electrical conductivity, good thermal stability, small linear expansion coefficient, high-temperature strength, and good wear resistance. They are resistant to corrosion by various acids, alkalis, salts, and organic solvents, and are not easily corroded by molten slag and molten iron. However, they are easily oxidized in an oxidizing atmosphere.
The production process of carbon bricks is roughly similar to that of other refractory products, but when producing carbon products, carbon oxidation at high temperatures must be prevented. The calcination of raw materials and the roasting of products must be carried out in a reducing atmosphere. The body of the baked carbon bricks should be processed by planers, milling machines, and other machines to achieve the geometric dimensions specified in the design.
When producing graphite carbon bricks, the baked carbon brick products must also be graphitized at a high temperature of more than 2400°C. When producing semi-graphite carbon brick products, graphite must be introduced into the ingredients.
Application of Carbon Bricks
Carbon brick products are widely used in the metallurgical industry. According to the purpose, they can be divided into blast furnace carbon bricks, electric furnace carbon blocks, and aluminum electrolytic cell carbon blocks. Among them, blast furnace carbon bricks are used in the largest amount. The furnace bottom, furnace hearth, and belly of many blast furnaces are built with carbon bricks. The biggest advantage of using carbon bricks in blast furnaces is high-temperature strength and high-temperature volume stability, which can extend the life of blast furnaces. Carbon bricks can also be used for ferroalloy electric furnaces, electric furnace linings for producing phosphorus and soluble phosphate fertilizers, and aluminum electrolytic cell linings. In addition, it is also widely used in pickling tanks and electroplating tanks in the electroplating industry, dissolving tanks in the papermaking industry, reaction tanks and storage tanks in the chemical industry, and autoclaves in the petrochemical industry.
